The women race started at Musashinonomori Park in Chōfu, western Tokyo with the finish at the Fuji Speedway circuit in the Shizuoka prefecture.
The women road race was 137 kilometres (85mi) long with a total elevation of 2,692 metres (8,832ft). The first part of the men and women races was identical. The course first passed through the mostly flat outskirts of Tokyo's metropolitan area. After 80 kilometres (50mi) there was a long climb to Doushi Road with a total elevation of 1,000 metres (3,300ft). After reaching Lake Yamanakako in Yamanashi and crossing the Kagosaka Pass there was a fast 15 kilometres (9.3mi) descent. From here the courses were different for men and women, with the women course heading more directly to the Fuji Speedway.
