IX Men 1928
Draw for Round 1 and 1/8 Finals was held on May 17,1924.
Prince Consort Hendrik, who drew defending champions Uruguay as opponents of host Netherlands in the first round (1/8). Certainly the worst ever draw for any host country in any sports event ever.
Bulgaria on May 3rd and Greece on May 4th withdrew after beeing registered for the tournament.
Since the Paris 1924 Olympics, Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia had all introduced professionalism and did not enter the 1928 tournament.
United States also had professional football, but decided to enter with amateur selections.
Football in the Scandinavian countries was strictly amateur, and their federations disapproved of the FIFA regulations on "broken time payments" (compensation for lost earnings), which had been grudgingly accepted by the IOC on the proviso that payment was to be made to the employer of the player, so none of them entered.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, once again, withdrew from FIFA in 1928. So no Great Britain team played in the tournament.
Spanish side in Amsterdam was in fact a Basque Country selection.
