Olympic Champion Perkovic was almost a prohibitive favourite as the only athlete to have thrown 68 metres in 2013, which she’d done four times. The Croatian could not have got closer to that distance in Moscow, with 67.99 in round two.
The silver medal was expected to be contested by Barrios and Müller, but Robert-Michon produced a surprise. In eight global championships her best had been a sixth place in the London Olympics (or fifth once Darya Pishchalnikova’s disqualification is confirmed by the IOC). In Moscow, she produced three throws good enough to win the silver medal, culminating in a French record of 66.28 in the final round.
