Bolt’s pick-up in the final saw him gain a metre on the field by 60m, and at halfway he was 1½ metres clear of Ashmeade, with Gemili and Weir just behind. The defending champion extended his lead until easing down with 20m left, enabling Weir to gain ground. Behind them, Mitchell closed fast, moving up from seventh at 120m to third at the finish. For Bolt it was his third title in a row, and his fifth global gold in six years. The best ever-times were set for positions 6 & 8.
