Heidler had been the only woman to have set a world record in a world championship event in 2011, with her 79.42 in May. Three other marks ahead of her nearest rival made her a big favourite. Zhang was the early leader with 75.03, until Lysenko produced a seasonal best of 76.80 to start her campaign. This was followed by efforts of 77.09 and 77.13, all three efforts being championship records. Heidler was stuck in bronze medal position with efforts of 73.96 and 74.70, before reaching 76.06 in the fifth, but the day belonged to the tall (1.80m) Lysenko. “I thought 77 metres would for sure be enough for a medal,” she reflected, “but not enough for the win.”
