Li (67.98) and Müller (66.99) were the world’s leading throwers of 2011 prior to Daegu, and they duly led the qualifying round with 64.44 and 65.54 respectively. In the final, the Chinese was always one step ahead of the German, leading 65.28 to 65.06 in the opening round, and then improving to 66.52 ahead of Müller’s 65.97 in round two. Barrios threw 65.73 in the third to win the bronze. Li’s coach was Karl-Heinz Steinmetz, the German who had also advised the great multi-World Champion Lars Riedel.
