As with the women’s pole vault in Seville, this new event produced a splendid winning performance. No world record here but Melinte came close to her pending mark of 75.97 with a series which climaxed with 75.20, at the time the third longest ever throw. She thought that, but for the heat, she might have thrown one or two metres further. Kuzenkova, the event’s previous trail blazer, smashed her first effort into the netting but worked her way through to a final round 72.56, the longest ever non-winning mark. There was a huge gap after them but it was encouraging for the small nations that the bronze should go to a native of American Samoa, the US-based Misipeka.
Last of the 21 competitors with her only valid throw of 50.38 was 16 year-old Skolimowska … winner of the Olympic title a year later with 71.16!
