Kumbernuss couldn’t wait to avenge her 1997 World Indoor Championships defeat by Pavlysh, a result which terminated the German’s 53-win streak. “Losing in Paris,” she said, “lit the fire again inside me”; she “wanted to show who is boss in the ring.” Following an opening foul by Pavlysh, Kumbernuss started purposefully with 20.59 to establish a lead she was never to lose ... although it was close. Pavlysh threw 20.57 in the second round and although Kumbernuss responded with 20.71 the Ukrainian was always a danger and finished only 5cm down with 20.66, a far cry from the German’s 1.18m winning margin in 1995 over Huang Zhihong. The latter, champion in 1991 and 1993, finished fourth this time behind Storp, Kumbernuss’s training partner, whose bronze medal winning distance of 19.22 would have netted her 12th place in the 1987 final.
