Faumuina lived dangerously before winning New Zealand’s first ever world title (or medal even). In the qualifying competition she faced a crisis after fouling her first two throws. She might have opted for a safety throw but there was no compromise as she registered a distance of 64.58. In the final the same thing happened. Two fouls left her facing extinction and she needed over 61m to survive the cut. No problem ... despite, or maybe because of, the pressure she threw 66.82, which not only ensured her three more trials but won her the title. She had come a long way since Gothenburg where she failed to reach the final, placing 28th of the 33 entrants with 54.32. Defending champion Zvereva and Olympic silver medallist Sadova were unable to improve upon their second round efforts of 65.90 and 65.14 for the other medals.
