For the third successive World Championships, the qualifying round was won by Ilke Wyludda. Sadly, the German had been hampered by injury all summer and had nothing left for the final, finishing 11th.
The ex-Romanian Costian took an early lead in the final with throws of 63.90 and 64.78. Later in the second round, Burova threw 67.40 and this proved to be the winning effort. In the third round, Min moved into second place, but was back to third in the next round when Costian improved to 65.36.
