Eight days after winning the first of the Tokyo throws, China unexpectedly won the last. Xu Demei chose the best possible time to throw a personal best of 68.78: the first round of the final. Meier-Felke – the Rome silver medallist – threatened with 68.68 in the second round, but these two proved to be the only 68m+ efforts of the day.
The bronze medal also went to Germany but there was huge disappointment for the other German Forkel. She won the qualifying round with 68.14 then could only manage 57.90 in the final.
