Only one athlete had achieved 66m in 2004, Menéndez, who had
thrown this distance six times. She threw 64.91 to lead 11 qualifiers
past the required 61m, with Bicet (60.97) taking the final place ahead
of Finland’s Mihaela Ingberg (60.80), who achieved the furthest non-
qualifying mark ever.
Four throwers had managed 62+ in the first round of the final before
Menéndez threw. The spear flew out to 71.53, just one centimetre short
of her three year-old world record. The competition was effectively
ended, though the Cuban did produce another throw (68.60) easily
good enough to take the gold medal. Brejchová was holding second
place with 64.23 until the last round, when German veteran Nerius
(65.82) and Manjani (64.29) went past. Four Caribbean athletes fea-
tured in the top seven: three Cubans and Laverne Eve, who had won the
Pan American Junior Shot title 20 years earlier!
