Vyacheslav Voronin, who had cleared 2.40 in Aug 2000, was favourite with previous champions Austin and Sotomayor well regarded as medal possibilities. Atlanta champion Austin only cleared 2.20 in the qualifying round, 7cm short of the required height.
In the final 10 jumpers remained as the bar was moved up to 2.32. Voronin was the last to clear this height and placed 10th. As Klyugin was readying for his first attempt at 2.35 the heavens opened, and
Klyugin was the only jumper to manage this height in the wet and windy conditions.
