Tamara Press, older sister of Irina, the 80m hurdles winner, had three
times improved Zybina’s world record, culminating in 17.78 three
weeks before the Games, and was naturally the favourite for gold.
Medal contenders Brown and Sloper led the qualifiers with 16.15 and
16.07 respectively. After Lüttge led the first round with 16.21, Press
exploded with 17.32, the third-best throw ever, and the title was settled.
Lüttge won the battle for silver with two efforts beyond the best of
Brown and Sloper. Down in seventh place was Zybina, who had suf-
fered a rare bad day, finishing more than a metre down on her season’s
best of 16.73.
